Green Baby, Green Mama Event

Green Mama, Green Baby

Green Baby, Green Mama Event

Organized by: Mom to Bed by 8 and Iowa Mom

Anyone (and everyone!) who knows me in real life knows that I am a cloth diaper fanatic! I love all kinds of cloth diapers. I even like to make my own cloth diapers! My favorite (and most used) diapers of all time are plain old simple prefold diapers with Bummis Super Whisper Wraps! I mostly just fold the diaper and lay it in the wrap, but if I’m feeling especially energetic, I might fasten the diaper with a Snappi or a couple of diaper pins. At the next diaper change, I just toss everything that got dirty (flushing any solids, of course!) into the wet bag. When the wet bag is full, I empty it into our front-loading washing machine, wash it all on the lovely sanitary cycle and away we go! When it’s all done washing, I separate the covers (as I move everything else to the dryer) so that they can hang on a cheap wooden drying rack, and dry everything else in the machine. A long time ago, in a land far, far away,  we lived in a house with a clothesline outside. Back in those good old days, I hung all the diapers out to dry whenever possible. Now my youngest is learning to use the potty, so our cloth diaper days are mostly done. I am trying to convince m’duine that just maybe we need a small stash of cloth for when the grandsons visit, but I haven’t been successful, yet. Winning this giveaway would be a great way to start your stash, or to start the stash of a new family (or a family new to cloth)! And the Earth Mama Angel Baby products are just icing on the cake.

Not a Fan of Nursing In Public? Suck on This. (reblog)

Not a Fan of Nursing In Public? Suck on This..

This blog article reminds me of the time, shortly after Venturer was born, when she and I attended a company Christmas party. One of my coworkers commented on how quiet the baby had been, and asked if she normally went that long without nursing (said coworker knew I was a nursing mother). When I informed him that she had nursed twice during the night, he expressed his disappointment with missing his chance at a “boob shot.” He also expressed how impressed he was that I was taking such wonderful care of my newborn, which meant a lot to me. It was a wonderful confidence boost to me as a young breastfeeding mother.

Revenge of the Vegetarian *review*

Something that you may not know about me is that I was a vegetarian for five or six years, including one of my pregnancies and some of the time that I was nursing my oldest son. I enjoyed being a vegetarian. I’ve never been a huge fan of meat, especially red meat, so it wasn’t that tough a transition for me to become a vegetarian. In fact, the transition back to omnivore was much more difficult for me. If we ever move from the Midwest Edge of Nowhere, I may become a vegetarian again. It is difficult to find other (not veggie burgers) proteins for a vegetarian diet where we currently live.

To this day I retain some vegetarian traits. I still eat veggie burgers when the rest of the family has hamburgers, because I prefer the taste of them to any meat burgers. I don’t eat meat that still has bones in it. This has created some interesting conversations between m’duine and I. He grew up in Texas, home of the ginormous rare steak. His mother once thought he was cutting ribs off the bone for one of the children, only to be educated on the entertaining ways that he had come up with to get protein in me. If it occurs to me that I am eating something that used to be an animal, I’m done. I won’t be able to finish. This is one of the reasons m’duine does 95% of the cooking in our house.

The title of this book caught my eye. I’m used to a good deal of “ribbing” (pun intended) about my former vegetarianism and my current pickiness about meat eating. I was hoping for a tongue-in-cheek perspective, and boy did this book deliver! I was laughing from cover to cover. The author even gives some helpful information for people who don’t know much (or anything) about vegetarianism. This would be a great gift to give a friend or family member who doesn’t quite seem to “get it.” It would also be a great book to give to a vegetarian friend with a healthy sense of humor.

There are “interviews” with dead vegetarians, performed by a psychic. There’s a vegetarian zodiac. There are definitions of “veg speak”, some truthful and some delightfully tongue-in-cheek. There’s a “day in the life of a new vegetarian” diary. There’s even a V.Q. (Veggie Quotient) quiz at the end of the book!

Without giving away too much, I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It was a quick read with constant entertainment. I can’t wait to see if the author comes out with more books.

Knitting Patterns are just “guidelines” …

I finally finished another soaker for Braeden. It fits, but it’s got long legs, so it won’t by the time it’s cold enough for him to wear it! I’ve got a couple of old sweaters ready to be turned into recycled bum sweaters.

Currently on the needles is a Piggle hat to match the one I made Anna Maureen last winter.

I will update this post with pictures and links tomorrow.
